6. Thermodynamic properties and reversibility of absorption/desorption

Although many alanates contain significant quantities of hydrogen, and hydrogen can be desorbed at moderate temperatures (T < 300°C), their use as storage materials is only conceivable if their hydrogenation is reversible. The reversibility of the reaction is primarily a matter of thermodynamics.

Thermodynamic properties concerning hydrogen absorption and desorption can be determined from pressure-composition isotherm (PCT) curves. As an example, the PCT isotherms for absorption and desorption of sodium alanates, NaAlH 4 and Na 3 AlH 6 , at several temperatures are shown in figure
