As the Beau de Rochas and Diesel cycles can be considered as special cases of the combined cycle, the calculations are based on this cycle (figure 8 ).

First, we need to define the parameters involved in these calculations:

  • strokeC corresponds to the length of piston travel ;

  • the bore of a cylinder is its diameter D ;

  • Displacement is the volume displaced by one forward or return stroke of the piston: Vc=πD24C=V1V2
