The heat converters mentioned in this article are closed thermodynamic systems (i.e. they only exchange energy with the outside world, to the exclusion of any exchange of matter). For such a closed system operating in steady state or cyclic mode and exchanging heat with several heat sources, the first two principles of thermodynamics can be written as follows :
