2. Technique classification

In practice, water can be electrolyzed in a number of configurations. These are generally classified according to the nature and properties of the electrolyte, which can be either liquid or solid. When the electrolyte is solid, the water may be in liquid or vapor phase. Clearly, these different configurations do not work in the same way. The use of one or other of them has consequences not only for the electrolyzer's mode of operation, but also for the system's efficiency (yield) and production capacity, and therefore, ultimately, for the production cost and the cost price of the dihydrogen produced.
