3. Description of the elementary steps involved

3.1 Notion of PSA cycle

A PSA, RPSA, VSA or VPSA cycle is a repetitive sequence of an adsorption phase at high cycle pressure, a decompression phase, a regeneration/desorption phase at low cycle pressure and a final recompression phase.

In order to achieve this sequence, there are a large number of possibilities open to the unit designer. Indeed, by defining the direction of gas flow during the adsorption phase, we define the notion of co-current gas flow. Gas flowing in the opposite direction is therefore counter-current. So, by choosing the direction of gas flow in the adsorber for each stage of the pressure cycle, a wide variety of cycles can be defined.
