1. General

Slate is extracted from open-cast quarries (figure 1 ) or from underground quarries (figure 2 ). Once extracted in block form, the shale is sent to a workshop for splitting (figure 3 ) and then cut to commercial dimensions. It can then be sold as roofing slate.
