The lagooning system used in France was designed by the part of INRAE then known as Cemagref.

7.1 Natural lagooning: principle

The treatment of domestic wastewater involves a process that requires the water to remain for a long time in a series of sealed basins arranged one after the other. In practice, it's common to find plants with three basins (figure 15 ). However, opting for a configuration that includes four, or even six basins, can enable more thorough and effective disinfection.
