Injecting a gas into the groundwater to volatilize volatile compounds (air sparging) is a technique that has been widely used for the last ten years or so in cases where the soil has a simple geology (figure 1 ). This technique often competes with groundwater pumping and other in situ groundwater treatments. Air sparging is frequently coupled with venting (§ 34 ).

  • Principle

    Air sparging is an in situ process for local treatment of the saturated (dissolved, adsorbed) zone. The technique involves injecting a gas, usually air, into the formation via vertical or horizontal wells. This injection takes place below the level of the groundwater to be treated....
