2. Road classification in accordance with the Highway Code

There are two main sets of laws and regulations governing roads, grouped together in two codes, the full texts of which are constantly updated on the Legifrance website (see Pour en savoir plus):

  • Code de la Voirie routière ;

  • the Highway Code.

The Code de la Voirie routière defines the legal status of the different types of roads under its jurisdiction:

  • public domain (national roads) ;

  • départements (departmental roads) ;

  • municipalities (communal roads)

and the obligations imposed on them.
