1.1 The challenges of digitizing the building industry for integrated design

The use of IT tools for building design has developed with the introduction of drawing tools (CAD) and simulation tools dedicated to the various trades and, in particular, for :

• building energy ;

• life cycle analysis ;

• acoustic studies ;

• structural design ;

• planning ;

• overall cost calculation.

For each of these business tools, specific computer representations of the work elements and associated data have been designed in different formats.
