Conclusions

A common conservation practice for 19th-century iron heritage and steel structures, the repair of these structures is mainly concerned with corrosion problems.

In addition to this particular problem, steel has the particularity of repairing itself for other pathologies such as wear and fatigue, as well as repairing constructions made with other old materials, such as masonry or wooden structures. It is also suitable for more contemporary materials such as reinforced or prestressed concrete and glued-laminated timber.

Written in a practical spirit, this article shows the variety of its applications in building rehabilitation. It provides an extensive description of how the material can be used to repair and consolidate structures, as well as to add new volumes inside, on top of or as extensions to existing structures.
