4. Spheroidal graphite cast irons (GS)

4.1 Composition of GS cast irons

The typical composition of GS cast irons is as follows:

  • carbon: 3 to 4% ;

  • silicon: 1.8 to 3% (or 4 to 6% for better corrosion resistance) ;

  • manganese :

    • 0.1 to 0.2% (to obtain a ferritic structure),

    • 0.2 to 0.4% (to obtain a pearlitic structure),

    • 1.8 to 4% (to obtain an austenitic structure) ;

  • sulfur: 0.01% ;

  • phosphorus: < 0.08%.
