Overview

ABSTRACT

This article meticulously outlines the varieties of cast iron, their manufacturing processes, micrographic structures, and applications. White cast irons, achieved through rapid cooling and specific manganese and silicon content, are characterized by high hardness, used in wear-resistant applications after thermal stabilization. Gray cast irons, with carbon in the form of graphite, have complex structures and diverse applications, notably in mechanical construction and chemical engineering. Malleable cast irons, enhanced through specific heat treatments, are designed to optimize their malleability. The manufacturing process of spheroidal graphite (SG) cast irons is also explained, highlighting the influence of alloying elements and heat treatments on the mechanical properties and matrix structures, facilitating a wide range of industrial applications. The document also details heat treatments like stabilization, ferritisation, graphitisation, and quenching, altering the mechanical properties of cast irons for specific applications.
