5. Exterior wood cladding

Choosing the right wood species for your deck is the first decision to make. The choice should be based on three factors: budget, aesthetics and climate resistance.

Exotic woods are not for the budget-conscious, so select simple but resistant woods like spruce and pine.

The color of the wood deck can also be a feature to be taken into account when choosing a wood species.

Choose a species adapted or treated to suit the region's climate.

The depth of preservative impregnation is determined by risk classes defined according to the wood's use. The four main classes are :

  • class 1: wood always sheltered, no humidification possible ;

  • class 2: wood always protected from the elements, possible dampening by occasional condensation;...
