8. Environmental aspects

Among the directions described in the national hydrogen strategy for energy transition (with a budget in France of around 15 billion euros between now and 2030), fuel cell systems will be deployed for mobility and, in the medium-to-long term, for integration as a stabilizing element in power grids.

Public authorities have also identified the need to decarbonize the industrial and construction sectors. In these sectors, fuel cells could be used for local electricity production or cogeneration (electricity and heat). To date, fuel cell programs worldwide, and in particular in Japan, use natural gas rather than hydrogen as a fuel. This technology, with overall efficiencies (electrical and thermal) of 90-95%, could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of these sectors, provided the systems are fuelled by synthetic methane or decarbonated hydrogen.
