3. Traceability and uncertainty of magnetic measurements
Measurements are essential for the manufacture and sale of magnetic products, and for any research involving magnetic materials. They need to be traceable to SI base units and their derivatives, i.e. linked to the corresponding standards by an interrupted chain of comparisons, each with an established uncertainty. Industrial and research laboratories can obtain traceability for a specific type of measurement through accredited laboratories or directly from a national metrology institute (NMI). The mission of NMIs is to ensure that standards are the most accurate materializations of units, so that they can be disseminated to the measurement network. To ensure this calibration production, calibration and accreditation systems have been developed.
