3. Phenomenology of materials magnetism at the microscopic scale

In this section, we describe the most common classes of magnetic behavior and propose a phenomenological interpretation on a microscopic scale. A distinction is made between diamagnetic, paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic behavior. The scale at which these properties are studied remains smaller than the size of the magnetic domains characteristic of ferro- and ferrimagnetic states
