2. Wave energy conversion systems

There are many concepts and systems for recovering wave energy, as human beings have been trying to capture some of this abundant energy for a very long time (the first patent on a wave energy recovery system dates back to 1799!). However, the random nature of waves and the inhospitable nature of the marine environment make energy recovery a complex problem, and have long held back the development of conversion systems.

2.1 System categories

The development of wave energy conversion systems has seen the emergence of a wide variety of concepts. Research in this field began in the 1980s, in the wake of the oil crises, and resulted in first-generation machines that failed to demonstrate their economic viability.
