1. Classic applications

The two classic application areas for voltage inverters are emergency power supplies and variable-speed drives. They also fall into two main families: fixed-frequency and variable-frequency systems.

We'll use a brief description of these two well-known examples to remind you of some basic structural and functional elements, which will be necessary to introduce a generalization of the properties of this conversion function.

1.1 Typical fixed-frequency configuration

An example of a typical fixed-frequency configuration is the uninterruptible power supply (UPS), which compensates for AC network failures by recreating the corresponding voltage from a battery. Figure
