4. Cable link construction and operation

4.1 General

The study of an underground transmission or distribution link must first define the following points:

  • the most appropriate cable technology, taking into account the characteristics of the link, in particular its length, installation and operating conditions;

  • cable sizing, taking into account the load to be carried and its foreseeable future evolution, short-circuit current and, possibly, voltage drop problems;

  • the initial investment cost and subsequent operating costs, including any maintenance costs.
