6. Lithium-ion batteries

We know that in 1991, the Japanese firm Sony marketed a lithium-ion secondary battery designed to power camcorders. The insertion compounds are coke on the negative side and lithiated cobalt oxide LiCoO 2 on the positive side. The electrodes are thin and spirally wound. The active material is deposited on both sides of a metal foil, copper on the negative and aluminum on the positive. The electrolyte is immobilized in a microporous polymer. The metal container is cylindrical. It is fitted with an internal mechanical system that interrupts the current when the gas pressure within it reaches a threshold value. In addition, the manufacturer provides a list of recommendations specifying discharge temperature, current and voltage limitations. Finally, it is advisable to install a current-limiting device on the electrical circuit into which the battery...
