9. Optical wave interactions – magnetostatic waves in integrated magneto-optics

Magnetostatic waves (MW) are magnetic disturbances that propagate at microwave frequencies in ferrimagnetic materials subjected to a magnetic field, with wavelengths between 1 μm and 1 cm . A magnetostatic wave propagating in a thin layer of ferrimagnetic garnet generates a periodic variation in the non-diagonal elements of the optical permittivity tensor. A beam propagating in integrated optics in the same garnet layer can be diffracted by this periodic polarization rotation grating.
