1. Modulation: a technique for controlling static converters

A static converter (SC) is an electrical energy conversion device which, in conjunction with an appropriate control scheme, makes it possible to control energy exchanges between a generator and a receiver. This chapter describes the link between, on the one hand, the control commands generated and the state of the elementary switching cell, and on the other hand, the value of the average voltage obtained across the load. This description makes it possible to introduce two important concepts for implementing a modulation scheme: the switching period and the duty cycle. A first generic modulation scheme is thus proposed.
