5. Transmitter/receiver module design

The dual advantages of silicon photonics technology - increased circuit complexity and higher integration density - open up new prospects for the design of future generations of transceiver modules to be deployed in fiber optic networks. In this respect, silicon photonics is taken into account in the roadmaps for these developments, whether for short-distance applications (datacom, datacenters) or long-distance applications. Increased complexity enables the integration on a single chip of several functions that would be difficult to assemble and interconnect if they consisted of several discrete components. The density of integration makes it possible to obtain very compact modules, and therefore an increase in total bandwidth at the level of a transmission bay.
