4. MTBF and reliability

A legitimate user concern is the search for a "reliable" power supply. To try and specify this subjective notion, statisticians have defined two terms: MTBF (mean time between failure) and reliability itself.

4.1 MTBF calculated or demonstrated

Calculating MTBF is an extremely thankless task. It is described in MIL-HDBK-217F and its addenda. The calculation involves summing the failure rates of each individual component at operating temperature. This failure rate depends on its failure rate multiplied by its stress level. The result is λ , failure rate per million operating hours.
