3. IP network services

The Internet is a data transmission network that supports both document and message communications in delayed time, as well as real-time communications such as voice. It is ideally suited to the transmission and broadcasting of faxes, in both real-time and non-real-time modes.

Widespread Internet Protocol (IP) networks and a well-defined fax data format are two key factors in the rapid development of fax over IP (Box 3).
