4. Determining the operating conditions of an optical system

An optical transmission system is a solution offered by a telecoms equipment supplier to a fixed or mobile telephone operator, or to an Internet service provider who requests it. The latter will have expressed the need to transmit a predefined quantity of information from one connection point of its network to another connection point along a known optical path. He will indicate to his supplier the characteristics of his fiber, inherited from a previous infrastructure or pre-installed according to his advice. In addition, he will provide him with the location of the amplifiers, the geography of which is rarely changeable.

For his part, the equipment supplier will have first developed a hardware and software platform, whose configuration and parameters he will have to adjust to meet the need. This platform can host several types of transmitting (data rates, modulation...
