A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a generic term. It refers to the use of a network (private or public) to interconnect a set of customer sites that are separated from other customer networks.

A Layer 2 VPN (L2VPN) is a VPN where client interconnection is based on the frame level (layer 2 of the OSI model).

It enables client frames to be routed between sites belonging to the same VPN, over a private or public network infrastructure.
