5. Performance

The efficiency of a compression format depends on intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

5.1 Intrinsic factors

Intrinsic performance factors, i.e. those directly linked to codec specifications, depend on :

  • 1) the type of algorithm used, for example in image compression: DCT (with JPEG, MPEG... formats) or DWT (with JPEG 2000 format) for still or moving images (figure 13 );

  • 2) the compression format itself, for example :

    • MPEG Audio compared to G.722/G.723...
