3. Conclusion: research prospects

As we have seen throughout this brief presentation, while our knowledge of the visual field is considerable, it is still a long way from providing us with a complete overview of the inner workings of this particularly complex sensory function.

In the field of fundamental research, work on the retina and the brain of animals continues unabated, each day bringing new findings which we must then try to integrate into hypotheses of functioning based on a few measurements extrapolated to an entire structure. While it may be forever impossible to simultaneously record the intimate physiological phenomena of millions of cells, it will certainly be possible in the future to build theories that are increasingly reliable and close to reality. And reality is not necessarily simple...
