12. Example of an auditory and visual application

This example shows that for two very different modalities, hearing and vision, it is possible to have the same mode of information processing, with semantic representations expressing the perceptual result.

Sound from the eardrum is transmitted to the basilar membrane inside the cochlea, where receptor cilia perceive the vibration and translate the information into neural signals. Excitatory cilia loop to normalize the signals. The receptor cilia transmit a frequency and intensity representation to the cortex (highly simplified diagram)
