2. Architecture of a business intelligence system

We generally consider a three-level architecture (figure 2 ):

  • information sources, corresponding to all production and site databases from which decision-making information is extracted;

  • the warehouse, which contains all the data extracted from these sources;

  • warehouses extracted from the warehouse and dedicated to different classes of decision-makers.

The three levels of this architecture are not necessarily present in business intelligence systems. For example, commercial software can be used to build warehouses directly from sources.
