6. Environmental aspects

Artificial intelligence tools enable computers to perform "intelligent" tasks such as decision-making, problem-solving, perception/identification and even the analysis of human communication and behavior. AI has become ubiquitous in today's society, and its impact on the environment is significant in terms of its carbon footprint. Indeed, the carbon footprint of IT systems is that of the fossil fuels used to produce the electricity consumed. Fossil fuels still account for a significant proportion of the energy mix. Only in Iceland and Norway is the rate of renewable electricity production approaching 100%. In other countries, the decarbonization of electricity is still several decades away. In particular, the carbon footprint and the role of AI in climate change have recently come under scrutiny.
