1.1 Free Unix

Although "Linux" is sometimes an acronym for "Linux Is Not UniX", Linux is an operating system kernel that practically complies with POSIX standards, and its name is above all a pun on the name of its creator, Linus Torvalds.

Nota

the POSIX standard is not freely available. Obtaining a copy from the IEEE costs several hundred dollars ($500 in December 2015 for an electronic PDF version of the IEEE 1003.1-2013 standard).

POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface) is the consumer name for a set of IEEE 1003 (or ISO 9945) standards that define many aspects of an operating system. The X in POSIX is a reminder that the standard is based on the heritage of Unix systems
