3. Designation and information management

Information management and exchange with the outside world is another major function of operating systems. The notions of naming and linking underpin all aspects of information management, the visible elements of which are files, I/O, the program life cycle and the virtual memory execution environment.

3.1 Names, access chains and links

We call an object any entity (material resource or information) accessible to a process. The name of an object is a piece of information associated with the object, which has two functions: to identify the object (distinguish it from other objects); and to provide a means of accessing and using the object. The name is said to designate the object.
