6. Geolocation

Android devices offer several ways of determining a user's geographical position. There are currently three of them:

  • if the device has a built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) sensor, it benefits from satellite geolocation;

  • wireless geolocation is based on the position of WiFi access points or cellular antennas;

  • with the passive method, the application does not directly request the position, but obtains it when other applications or services request it. In this case, it can ask for the origin of the information.

Whichever method is chosen, it is necessary to declare permissions in a "manifest" file (AndroidManifest.xml):

  • for precise geolocation (mandatory for GPS).
