XML is a versatile data structuring and storage format that plays an important role in the worlds of programming, documentation and publishing. It has its own presentation and query models, making it a complete tool for the storage and exchange of structured data. XML could have been "the" reference language for exchanging data flows between information systems. But the new problems associated with Big Data, or the 5Vs (Value, Volume, Velocity, Variety and Veracity), have changed all that. As a Not Only SQL (NoSQL) language, it integrates perfectly into architectures that do not require the use of relational databases, although it can also handle certain aspects. However, lighter formats such as CSV and JSON, which are simpler, more flexible and less voluminous, are often preferred for managing NoSQL databases.
