System interoperability relies on increased communication between systems. To this end, we have used an example from the two development languages most widely used in their context (Java and PHP) to illustrate the problems associated with XML. Indeed, XML facilitates exchanges between systems, provided that each of them can properly process and exploit the data contained in these XML documents. Using the example of order management, we have presented the main approaches to exploiting this data, depending on the objective of the system receiving the XML data: pure relational vision, pure semi-structured vision and mixed vision.
