3. A document manipulation language

The problem of information retrieval in documentary object databases can be approached from different angles, essentially linked to two contexts that are usually contrasted, namely that of databases and that of information retrieval systems (IRS).

The first is characterized by information retrieval using query languages such as SQL/OQL [4] , which are relatively complex to understand due to their degree of abstraction. The documents handled must conform as closely as possible to a rigid structure encapsulated in the database schema. Querying structured document(s), generally stored in (R/OO) DBMSs, is also constrained in this context by the specification of a schema verified by data and queries, as well as by the exact correspondence between queries and returned values.
