3. Paralinguistic organizers

Consultation of a digital document is influenced by the presentation devices used. While the content of the document plays a direct part in the construction of meaning, the presentation devices have a major influence on the construction of the mental representation that the reader constructs of what is "said by the document". These devices thus play a part in the rhetoric of electronic writing, with different functions.

3.1 Definition

Presentation devices, whether graphic or temporal, constitute a set of "paralinguistic" organizers, as opposed to purely textual equivalents.
