4. 802.11ah protocol energy optimization mechanisms

The CSMA/CA mechanism consumes a significant proportion of resources when there are multiple attempts to access the media. To minimize energy consumption and maximize access to a large number of stations, several mechanisms have been proposed in the standard 802.11ah .

4.1 802.11ah station operating modes

An 802.11ah station has two modes of operation. In active mode, it is continuously in a receive state, and the AP can send it frames at any time. In power-saving mode, the station is more often in a standby or sleep state.

The AP has to wait for a wake-up phase before sending it frames. When it wakes up, a station cannot access the media directly, as it may be used...
