4. Catalyst deactivation

This is an extremely important phenomenon in industrial practice, as the activity of a catalyst deteriorates as it is used. To account for this phenomenon, we define a quantity "a" which, from a formal point of view, defines the instantaneous activity of the catalyst by the ratio : a=r0

with :

speed at the initial instant.

To be more precise, "a" is a local quantity defined at a point on the catalyst...
