2. Liquid-solid equilibrium

2.1 Lowering the solidification temperature: cryoscopy

Consider a liquid solution A -B in equilibrium with a solid A; A is the solvent and B the solute. It can always be seen that the solidification temperature T of the mixture AB is lower than the melting temperature (T f ) of the pure body A. The difference due to the solute :

ΔT f = T f – T

is called cryoscopic lowering.
