1.1 The benefits and expectations of CFD in engineering
CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) is simply numerical calculation applied to fluid mechanics. It involves solving the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics in a given geometry, and coupling them to heat transfer or chemical reaction equations. Historically, CFD began to develop in mechanical engineering, to study flows around an object in order to better profile it (aircraft wings, automobiles). In chemical engineering, the problems are generally much more complex, due in particular to the multiphase nature of flows, chemical reactions and the rheological behavior of fluids.
