2. Cells that can function as current generators (batteries)

One of the main industrial applications of electrochemistry is the creation of systems capable of supplying electric current or an electric potential difference (voltage). Electrochemical generators, more commonly known as batteries, are electrochemical cells (two current-collecting electrodes + electrolyte(s) + electroactive compounds) capable of spontaneous "internal" electrolysis.
