4. Conductivity measurements and transport numbers
For the characterization of conduction mechanisms, essential in electrochemical systems, in addition to conductivity measurements, it is also necessary to determine each of the contributions when there are several charge carriers.
4.1 Conductimetry
The classic principle is to measure the resistance of the electrolyte in a known geometry, by calculating the ratio between the amplitude of the electrical voltage, measured at the terminals, and the intensity of the current flowing through the material. The choice of geometry is therefore important (see § 4.1.1).
