5. Safety and environmental data

The aim of toxicology is to establish the risks posed by products to human and animal health, so that preventive measures can be taken.

In addition to acute and chronic toxic effects (particularly carcinogenic, mutagenic and teratogenic effects), biodegradability and bioaccumulation in the food chain need to be examined.

5.1 Toxicity by ingestion

Acute toxicity is tested on animals (usually rats) and is measured by the LD (lethal dose), expressed in mg ingested per kg of animal weight. The LD is the quantity ingested that causes death.
