6. Technological evolution and economic context

The major recent developments have been in improving yields and increasing unit size: the latter is a step in the direction of greater plant profitability, but it is not without its pernicious effects, which we'll come back to later.

6.1 Technological evolution

Advances in metallurgy have led to a new generation of tubes, increasing their diameter at furnace outlet, with a number of advantages, including:

  • Reduced pressure drop and therefore partial pressure of hydrocarbons;
