5. Hydrogen storage, transport and distribution
These are three essential links in the chain between production and use.
5.1 Hydrogen storage
The concept of "hydrogen storage" refers to all forms of storing hydrogen with a view to making it available at a later date as a chemical product or energy carrier. This step is necessary because, in gas form, hydrogen is not very dense and therefore not very practical to transport. By way of illustration, it takes a volume of around 11 m 3 - the boot volume of a large van - to store just 1 kg of hydrogen, the amount needed to travel 100 km. It is therefore essential to increase its density, and several techniques exist for this purpose:
