2. Current uses and production of hydrogen

2.1 Hydrogen use in the industrial sector

According to AFHYPAC (Association Française de l'Hydrogène et des Piles à Combustible), worldwide hydrogen production was 56.7 MT in 2008, or 630 GNm 3 . Hydrogen is mainly used for chemical, petrochemical and refining needs. Its use as a primary energy source is negligible. On the other hand, it plays an important role in oil refining, and as such can substantially improve fuel quality. Table
